A dental crown, sometimes called a cap, replaces the part of your tooth that’s visible above the gum line. A good crown matches and complements your other teeth in color and shape.
Who Needs a Dental Crown?
There are many reasons that a dental crown might be the best solution for your smile. For example:
- You may be missing an entire tooth and need a crown to complete an implant.
- You may have a tooth that is damaged beyond what a filling can fix.
- You may have recently had a root canal to save a tooth and need a crown to protect it and restore its appearance.
Though crowns previously were made of metal and then later porcelain fused to metal, Doctors Dang and Millet prefer high-quality all-ceramic crowns. Ceramic crowns mimic the aesthetic subtleties we take for granted in natural teeth—their translucency, their color nuance, and the way they reflect light. Modern ceramic crowns are strong enough to place on back teeth and beautiful enough for the front of your mouth.
Same-Day CEREC Crowns
Before CAD/CAM technology made same-day crowns possible, restoring a tooth took at least two office visits. That’s because the dentist would need an outside laboratory to craft the crown. That could take weeks; in the interim, you’d have to wear a temporary crown far inferior in fit and comfort to a permanent one.
Dr. Dang uses the CEREC CAD/CAM system to make same-day crowns. With our small digital scanner, taking impressions of your mouth is quick and easy, with no mess or gummy paste. The CEREC computer system helps Dr. Dang design an aesthetically pleasing and precisely fitting crown. While you wait, Dr. Dang will use the CEREC milling system to create the new tooth from a single block of biocompatible ceramic. The ceramic blocks come in a variety of natural-looking hues for a perfect match.
After the CEREC machine mills your new tooth, Dr. Dang will place it in your mouth so you can see how it looks. If it isn’t right, it can be adjusted or remade. When you’re happy, Dr. Dang will bond the crown securely in place. When you leave the office, you’ll be able to eat, smile, and speak normally.
