How Many Veneers Are Recommended?

Back to Blogs

So you’re thinking about getting veneers. One question that patients often have is: how many veneers should I get? Should I cover just one tooth, all my front teeth, my top or bottom teeth, or every tooth I have?

The answer depends mainly on personal preference and the condition of your teeth. Let’s explore why a cosmetic dentist will or won’t recommend veneers.

Veneers Ensure a Uniform Smile

The goal of any cosmetic dentistry treatment is to produce a uniform smile. Patients may prefer different shades of white overall, but differences in coloration between teeth are not aesthetically desirable.

So if you have one tooth that is severely discolored, while you still like the shade of the surrounding teeth, you may only need one veneer to match the color of the one problem tooth with its neighbors. But if your teeth have different shades, then it may be best to get veneers on all of them so they look the same.

It may not be necessary to get veneers on your back molars since these aren’t visible when you smile. The choice of how many veneers to get is generally based on personal preference.

When a Dentist Won’t Recommend Veneers

There are a few circumstances when your dentist won’t recommend veneers.

  • Veneers are not suitable for teeth that are unhealthy, weakened, or decayed. This is because veneers require a certain amount of tooth enamel to support them. If your enamel is too thin, then veneers could damage your teeth further and lead to additional decay.
  • If you clench or grind your teeth, then veneers are also not recommended. Clenching and grinding can cause veneers to chip and crack, and then they’ll need to be replaced.
  • If you’re unsure about your aesthetic goals, your dentist will advise you to wait before getting veneers, since they’re permanent and the color can’t be changed once they’re installed.
