Habits to Avoid with Dentures

Back to Blogs

Wearing dentures can restore both function and confidence, but like any dental appliance, they require proper care to ensure they last and remain comfortable. While dentures are designed to withstand the daily demands of chewing and speaking, certain habits can significantly shorten their lifespan or affect oral health. Here are some common habits you should avoid if you wear dentures.

Sleeping with Your Dentures

It may seem convenient to leave dentures in overnight, but doing so can lead to multiple problems. Wearing dentures during this time may increase the risk of bacterial growth, oral infections, and gum irritation. Removing them at night allows your mouth tissues to rest and gives you the chance to clean your dentures thoroughly.

Using Abrasive Cleaners

Many people assume regular toothpaste works for cleaning dentures, but this can actually cause damage. Standard toothpaste contains abrasive particles that may scratch the denture surface, making it more prone to staining and harboring bacteria. Instead, use a soft-bristled brush and a cleaner specifically designed for dentures.

Chewing Hard or Sticky Foods

Just like natural teeth, dentures can be damaged by chewing ice, hard candies, or sticky foods like caramel. These can cause damage and misalignment. Consider cutting food into smaller pieces and avoiding extremely tough items can help protect your dentures.

Skipping Regular Dental Checkups

Even with dentures, dental visits are crucial. Our Scottsdale dentist ensures the fit is correct and checks for any irritation, infections, or bone changes in your jaw. Ignoring appointments may lead to discomfort or more serious oral health issues.

Not Handling Dentures Carefully

Dropping dentures can easily cause cracks or fractures. Always clean them over a folded towel or a sink filled with water to minimize any change of damage.

By avoiding these habits and practicing good oral hygiene, you can keep your dentures in top condition, ensuring they continue to provide comfort and function for years.
