Denture Management Tips: 24 Hours After Treatment

Back to Blogs

The first 24 hours after receiving new dentures are often the most critical. Your mouth is adjusting to a new appliance, and how you care for yourself during this period can determine how smoothly your recovery goes. While some initial discomfort is completely normal, there are practical steps you can take to minimize irritation and help your gums heal properly.

Follow Post-Treatment Recommendations from Your Scottsdale Dentist

One of the most important things to remember is to follow your dentist’s post-treatment instructions closely. They may advise you to keep your dentures in for the first night, even while sleeping. This helps the soft tissues adapt to the new shape and allows the dentist to identify any sore spots or areas that may need adjustment during your follow-up visit.

Rinsing and Cleaning

Swelling and mild tenderness are common during the first day. Rinsing gently with warm salt water several times can help soothe your gums and reduce inflammation. It’s best to avoid removing your dentures for long periods during this time, as your gums might swell slightly, making it harder to reinsert them comfortably.

Stick to soft foods for at least the first 24 hours. Yogurt, soup, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs are good options while your mouth gets used to chewing with dentures. Avoid anything sticky, crunchy, or hard until you feel more comfortable.

Hydration is Also Key

Staying hydrated keeps your mouth moist, which helps with comfort and supports the healing process. However, avoid using straws during the first day since the suction can irritate sensitive gum tissue.

Finally, resist the urge to adjust your dentures on your own. Even minor changes can affect the fit and cause unnecessary discomfort. If you feel any sharp edges or persistent soreness, contact your dentist. A quick adjustment can make a big difference in comfort.

The first day with dentures takes patience, but with careful management and open communication with your dental team, you’ll set yourself up for a much smoother adjustment period.
