A single dental implant consists of three parts:

• a titanium root to replace the extracted tooth root
• a titanium abutment that connects the root to a crown
• a crown, which mimics a natural tooth

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants offer a long-term health benefit unmatched by any other tooth replacement option: they prevent your jawbone from shrinking. Why does the jawbone shrink after tooth loss? Each tooth is anchored in your jaw. When you lose a tooth, it no longer exerts pressure on the jawbone. Detecting this, your body will resorb minerals from the jaw, weakening and shrinking it. Fortunately, placing an implant stops the mineral resorption. In 10 to 20 years, a patient with no remaining teeth can lose so much jawbone that their face takes on a collapsed look.

It’s best to place implants soon after tooth loss to preserve as much jawbone as possible. The healthier your jawbone is, the more stable the implant will be. If you don’t have enough jawbone to support an implant, Dr. Dang may be able to use a bone graft to fortify your jaw. Alternatively, All-on-4 implant dentures can give patients with atrophied jawbones a new smile without bone grafts.

Another benefit of dental implants is they completely restore your normal bite strength. That is especially true of implant dentures. Removable dentures offer only a percentage of the bite strength of natural teeth. Denture wearers can struggle to eat certain foods, like whole apples or steak. With implant dentures, you can eat anything you want.

Getting Dental Implants

At your first dental implant appointment, we will take 3-D x-rays and digital impressions of your mouth. Dr. Dang will use these images to determine the optimal placement for your implant and design your dental crown.

Next, an oral surgeon will place a titanium post in your jaw to anchor the replacement tooth. Sedation is available for anxious patients during this relatively quick procedure.

Over the next approximately three months, the titanium root will firmly bond to your jawbone in a process called osseointegration. When your oral tissues have healed, Dr. Dang will place an abutment and a custom crown on the titanium root to restore your tooth’s appearance. When you leave the office, you’ll be able to smile with confidence.
